Hi Everyone! After wanting to raise chickens since my 4-H days ( many many moons ago) my DH and I purchased a home with a much bigger yard in a town which allows chickens. Our neighbor's flock must be close to a dozen, but we're keeping ours to about half that. We adopted 2 laying Asa hens back in March and have since added 2 Buff Orps (They were straight run and I had to guess. They're now about 11 weeks, one turned out to be a roo...) and now 3 Barred Rocks (pullets, if Tractor Supply did their homework correctly). So hopefully, we end up with 6 hens and our rooster. My mini-me (age 4) named them all. The Asa hens are Waffles and Syrup. The Orps are Timbit and Double Double (he's the roo). Lastly, the new little baby Bars are Coffee, Grape and Chocolate Frosted Doughnut. I swear my daughter doesn't eat at Tim Hortons every day. It's a special treat and I guess she feels the chickens are special, too. I'm surprised at the lack of real "work" raising chickens takes. As we also have two dogs and a cat, the chickens are the easy part of my day!

I do need some advise, one of the older Asa hens (Syrup) is MEAN. As in, I get pecked filling the water, topping up feed and even dishing out mealworms. Any tips to make her like us a smidge more?

Thanks in advance for the welcome! I've been coming across older threads in my Google searches and figured it was time to join. :)
