Just want to send greetings, and introduce myself. This is my first time "joining" a forum. Every time I do a "search" on my computer for a chicken-related question, I have come to expect my answer to show up from this site!! I have decided that it is time to "join" since I have been on here so frequently I feel like a stalker! ha!
We are in the great state of Washington, born and raised and LOVE it here. I came up with my user name from my 2 year old grandaughter who calls me Namma, and she & her sister love my chicks! So that's that.
Thank you. I read some "tips" for newbies on things to share! So I guess I can add that I'm a "she" if you haven't figured that out, and my husband and I will have been married 27 years on 8-23. We have raised 4 wonderful children who have been primarily home schooled, and my oldest son has two adorable girls, making us grandparents (which we love).
We have "done" chickens before. MANY years ago, thinking free range was the way to go with our newly acquired 6 acres... well, then they were discovered by some pretty wild neighbor dogs... and we thought "Okay, a roomy fenced yard for the chickens"... but found that they were turned into "sitting ducks". We even witnessed the method of "each dog takes a corner and they all bark" method of chicken torture (which until this time only heard about)... and then one morning THIRTEEN birds were strung across our property. not. even. eaten.
so we took a break from birds.
At this time, (neighbor dogs long gone) I have bought eggs which we have hatched and are growing out: Lavender Orpingtons, Cream Legbars, & Black Copper Marans. Looking forward to my diverse egg colors and find them ALL beautiful!!
Last summer I had wanted Black Copper Marans, and on a whim stopped by a "chicken lady's house". She refused to sell me any hens, but I acquired a young rooster, and the "mystery bird" which I believe to be a Lavender Orpington, HOWEVER, her eggs have a green tint to them. So I am just keeping those guys seperate as I want to be able to market my youngsters as pure... what do you think? Can a pure Lavender Orpington lay a tinted egg??? Photos of my 1 year old birds:

I have appreciated the many tips on sexing my breed of birds (took hundreds of pages of reading, literally) and think that of my young lavender orpingtons (from purchased hatching eggs) I may only have ONE hen. HaHa!! Well, with one of each, I can certainly get more. SO feeling blessed.
