Hello, started raising Quail about 5 weeks ago, my neighbor was moving across state and gave me a awesome set-up. Gave me an excellent heads up and has recommended this site . I have 11 adults and 11 chicks. ( seperate cages ) 7 female layers and 3 males ,Getting a constant 6+ eggs a day Need help here though. 1 quail adult was bleeding from the mouth and I had to put her down 2 days ago.. ( not sure what caused this,) One reason I'm on this site. Also have need for help trying to keep the fly population down ( organic if possible). Have been using ditomatious earth, Thanks Jamie

! Pleased to have you in our flock! Unsure on what happened with your quail - might want to visit the quail thread below.

And for the fly problem you might ask in this thread. Personally, I like flytraps. No chemicals and very effective.

that is strange. Could you explain the symptoms and the birds demeanor more fully? I wonder if the D.E. in the food could have caused this? Are other birds acting different? Which one was it? Male or female? Was this after you put the males back in with the females? Good luck!

Hey It was after I put female back in I did that last week about the 2nd. It was a Female and a laying one at that was geting 8 for 8 now only 7 of 7 . She seemed to be ok just blood driping from her beak and had that wheezing kinda sound. felt sorry for her and put her down - Just like I showed u I do. No others show any unusual symptoms. Yes have been using the DE and seems to be well liked by them. They are all happy and content. The youngsters are all adjusting to the outdoors and the runt is almost caught up. I was wondering if the DE did something as I Poofed it a little under their cages to spread it - wont do that anymore and have some good Ideas on the flys Will try the waterbag forgot about that! Sounds like some kind of battle wound. I would imagine the males were worked up and got a little crazy when they got back at them. I wouldn't separate them any more as it may instigate more problems. The eggs are edible whether they are fertile or not... some say they are even more nutritious. Them males were most likely enraged from not getting any. I doubt a couple weeks of D.E. would cause this. Except for the blood the symptoms match quail bronchitis. Bronchitis usually only effects birds under 7 weeks old and is very contagious. If this bird had that illness you would know fairly quickly as others would get ill too. My money is on rough mating. Sorry for the loss. Let us know how it goes.

Yea just like we thought the males not gettin any is probably the cause ha ha ha ha . anyway Im up to 7 again yesterday 7/7 girls laying. Holly is going to town on the eggs. she loves em. The 11 young en's are doing fine and i gave all their first taste of dead meal worms. what a food fight. they went into a dead worm killing / eating frenzy . It was cool to watch as they were apprehensive at first. I put them in the box with the sand and they couldnt get enough. I also put a small tomato in for them to peck on - read on this forum about that. your old place rented yesterday, no move in yet so I have been raping the garden! Mega green peppers and a few red a couple cuks I wish I could find the aspergus stands you mentioned. I just cant seem to locate to nab them. Lots of squash ans the beans will be awesome in a few weeks I think. Anyhow all is going well and we had an explosive 4th if ya know what I mean. Cant wait to hatch "my own" here in a few weeks. Think I am going to build a bigger cage and move everything to the east side of the yard. Took care of fly problem with a little 10% pemrithrin and a spray bottle. will hang the watter bags today also. Well see how it goes. take care Jamie
