Whose egg? Marans?

Most cheap kitchen scales should be fine. I put a little sand or flour on the scale, then zero the weight and add the egg. This keeps the egg from rolling

Just caught her in the act...my Zombie is laying the medium brown egg! (She is LOUD and proud!) That one in the 1st post. I'm so surprised its so dark. It's really very beautiful.

Now I'm super curious her mix because she's certainly not ACxWL since I've read as well those would lay white.

If I can ask one tiny OT (off-topic) question: how did your girls react the first time they encountered the nest box curtains? Were they always there, before the girls started laying? I want to do something similar other coop door.

'OT'...I like that never heard of it that way!

As for the curtains my original girls didn't have them on the boxes initially. But no one was ever alarmed by them. Initially (and I still do this for the new babies), I keep the curtains parted so they can see the fake egg and an open nest box to go in. I would suggest that for you too.
BTW the curtains are great for so many reasons including keeping down girls chasing others out or trying to pile in, etc.
