I'm new to the forums but have frequented this website for some time now. My name is Jessica and I, along with my husband and 6 of our children (we have 8), currently live on an army post, Fort Leavenworth (although my husband is actually in the Navy
). Fort Leavenworth is located in NE Kansas, about 45 minutes from downtown Kansas City. I am originally from Jacksonville, Florida and my husband is from Detroit, MI. We've been moving so much with the military that we don't know where "home" is anymore. We've lived in Florida, Texas, Italy, Virginia, California and now Kansas. We have both fallen in love with this part of Kansas so, who knows, we may end up retiring here (hubby can retire in about 2.5 years) ?!?!
For years I have dreamed of owning land and raising our own food. While I can have a vegetable garden here I cannot have chickens or any other animals besides your typical house pets. Due to some health issues I'm experiencing, we decided to look for a one level home and happened to find one for rent with 80 acres!! I am soooooo excited!! The owner said we can have animals and dig up the yard for a garden. My dream is finally coming true!! I can't believe it.... someone pinch me!
The property is less than 10 minutes from post so my husband won't have some crazy commute. This is perfect for us!
My kids and I are already picking out chickens and getting ready to place our order. I do have some questions first though and am hoping to find answers here. I am excited to be a part of this forum.
