Hello from Dittmer, Missouri. I'm a 1st. time chicken owner as of Oct. 1st. 2020, I've always been a HUGE animal lover & I've been dreaming of having "pet chickens" for decades now. I'm originally from St. Louis, Mo. I have 3 married Daughters & am expecting my EIGHTH ~ (#8) Grandbaby in August 2021 🥰🥰🥰! My significant other & I have been together for 14 yrs. & We bought our home in the "forest" in 2018; It already had a chicken coop on in great disrepair. We finally got it up to par/ready around the end of September (not an ideal time for chickens) especially in Missouri! We went to our local Bucheits & they only had THREE baby chicks/sisters that were one week old (Plymouth Rocks). They're PERFECT...Sue, Sally & Sweet Pea! I snuggle them as much as possible without "traumatizing" them LOL! They turned 18 weeks on Jan. 28th. & I just learned that I've made a couple of mistakes; in particular, making little 'bedrooms' in their *nesting boxes! From what I understand they're only supposed to use *those to lay eggs in & they should be sleeping on the roost. So I'm going to have to break them of that! But, I'm going to wait until the spring since they seem to be so cozy.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I wouldn't wait until spring to break them of sleeping in the nest boxes. Block them now with either boxes inside them or board them over.
They need to understand now that those boxes are not for sleeping in.
And they keep their fluff cleaner by pooping off the roost.

Hey, EVERYBODY makes mistakes at first, even if they won't publicly admit it. The great news is, people here are really knowledgeable and helpful, ready to lead you to the best practices.

And, even when you do everything right, some hens refuse to go along with the plan. I have one who lives in a "perfect" set up, but still confuses one of the nest boxes with a bed. Her sisters, who grew up alongside her in the same coop, don't.

Welcome to you and your adorable little flock! It's good to meet you.
