HI!
I've been poking around here for about a month. It's been a big help. I first came across BYC when one of my Red Stars came down sick. I got wonderful advice here, and she was getting much better. Then, about a week and a half ago, we woke up to find all of our chickens dead. It was pretty upsetting as they were only 11 weeks old. We still dont know what killed them, but we do know how whatever it was got in the coop, and how to fix it. So, we're in the process of redesigning the coop to make it safer. Then, on Tuesday, I saw some adorable Australorp chicks for sale on craigslist. And I uhh... "accidently" called the guy, and drove 30 miles to get them. They're about a week old. And soo cute

So, I also have a question...can anyone suggest some good books on chickens?

from SW Ohio! I can't help you with any info on books. I get all my reading material from this site !
All the info I ever need I can find here.
Have fun with your babies!

Welcome! I am sorry to hear you lost your chickens but congrats on "accidentally" getting some more

I think there may be a book in the BYC store called Chickens for Dummies, not sure , let me check.......

I am ashamed to admit that in my thousands of books in my home...none of them are chicken books.

I used the Internet now more than anything. I have heard wonderful things about Storey's book on chickens. I have other farm book from them (which is why I guess I do not feel the need for a book JUST on chickens)and they are to the point and practical. They also have lots of drawings. I also have some animal science books, but really I find a lot of my practical information from doing most of my searches right here on BYC.
I am a new owner of an Australorp rooster. He is just a wonderful guy. If chickens have a bell curve for IQ, he is definitely several deviations above the mean.

Enjoy your birds. I hope they have nice long peaceful lives, and that all of your shells are nice and strong!
Welcome to BYC!

Thanks

I'm a really avid reader, my solution for most things is to find a book on it. But when I went hunting for chicken books, i found books on chickens, and books on homesteading, and books on hobby farms, and urban homesteading, and I want all of them.

But as I have a chicken run to build, and I suppose actually building a good chicken coop and run will help my babies more than just reading about it.
