New Mexico
Been a long time since I raised chickens, and those were meat birds. But since I retired from the military and moved my family down to rural New Mexico and onto a little acreage, I thought that this would be a great time to let my kids (daughter, 12 and son, 10) help raise some chickens and enjoy some fresh eggs. My daughter has been wanting to do this since we moved, and she's so excited now she can barely contain herself. I confess I'm pretty excited too.

In addition to the kids, the wife and I have three Labrador retreivers (a chocolate, black, and our new yellow pup; all adopted) that keep us busy. I just placed the order last night for our chicks. For a little variety, I split up the order and we'll be getting Welsummers, Buff Orpingtons, Columbian Wyandottes, Black Australorps, Speckled Sussex, Silver Laced Wyandottes and Ameraucanas. It sounds like a lot, but even with the 2 roosters (a Welsummer and a Buff Brahma) it only comes up to 27 and I think I was careful to keep it to fairly docile and friendly breeds. They should show up in late April, so the kids have something to look forward to! My wife confessed that she was really looking forward to this, too; so it'll be a real family affair.

So it looks like I'll be consulting the site quite a bit for some pointers this spring. This looks like a great site!
