Hello from New Zealand

Shavers are New Zealands hybrid egg bird (300+/year), nice bird too. Classic shape and colour (I'm a newbie, what would I know) Ours are laying pale brown speckled eggs, at 3 years old and in the middle of winter, we're getting 2 eggs every 3 or 4 days... not bad. The Barnevelders are yet to reach POL.... can't wait.

Thanks for the great welcome.

My coop has 5sqft of roost, and the ladies free range all day. But, what do I look out for if things are getting a bit crowded? I can clad the run, and pop in a couple of extra roosts relatively easily.

Maybe I should link over to coop forum and discuss this there

If they feel too crowded you will see them bickering, fighting, pulling out each others feathers etc. Free ranging all day will certianly make them happier. If you close them up in the coop at nights and sleep in late, that is when you could see problems.....or rainy days.

Hello and welcome to BYC! If your chickens are feeling too crowded in the coop, they peck each other and full each others feathers out. The coop you have now is good for 1 chicken. The standard guideline is 4 square feet per bird. Since they free range, they should be fine until finals are over. Good luck and it's nice to meet you.
