Yes they do they keep a lookout and sound the alarm BUT sometimes an alpha gen will start doing this too

I am in central nh, northern lakes region

Welcome from Vermont! A rooster, depending in its breed and temperament, would be a great addition to your flock so long as your local ordinances say it's okay.

She'll be kinda pushy maybe peck some others on the head and generally keep order
Some go so into their role as alpha that they will mock-mate
