Just wanted to stop in and say hello. My wife recently decided that she wanted chickens and it has seemed that everytime I google ANYTHING the only useful answer comes from this site. With such a wealth of information I figured id stop in and join and contribute when I can.
We live on the NH Seacoast and recently picked up 6 (now 5) buff orpingtons for laying as well as family pets/entertainment. I am an engineer at heart (not by trade) so I have really enjoyed building the coop, making a simple feeding solution as well as a watering setup that is minimal mess and upkeep. Almost everything I have done has been somewhat inspired directly from this site so I thought id share.
First attempt, they made too much of a mess and dropped more than they ate.
The fix. Made plexi "caps" which just a hole to peck through. Problem solved. The white is silicone to keep
the moisture out. I wanted to paint the plexi white for aesthetic reasons but its actually handy clear to see
the status of the pellets feeding to where they need to be.
