Hello all, We started with 5 chicks from Tractor Supply and not much knowledge of what to do. I spent a lot of time reading and watching YouTube videos to provide the best possible environment for the chicks to thrive. We also divided our yard with a fence to keep the pups away from the chickens and our raised beds, but as it turns out the dogs are the ones who needed protection! We have since added 7 more hens for a total of 12. There’s something about mini homesteading that brings tremendous pleasure to us. Thank you for the opportunity to be part of the community! Welcome from another NJ chicken keeper. Be careful, I have a lot of hawks in my area. They are very bold and don't seem to be scared of anything.

That’s a big concern by me as well. So far we’ve been lucky, especially since we are surrounded by Pine Barrens. We have a huge Owl that lives in the woods behind us. I just hope he keeps his distance!

Keep those hens safe. Even rooster can fall victim to those aerial predators.
