My daughter has had a pet Americana named easter for about 3 years. We decided it was almost as much trouble to properly care for one as it would be to have a flock. So we looked around and found a farm that would sell us a wide variety in a small quantity. We ended up with 13 pellets guaranteed to be hens of a wide variety from Americana to leg horn.
This weekend we are building the coop and yard. For the last 3 weeks we have had chickens in our basement. I look forward to some fresh eggs for us and the neighbors.

Thank you for the kind welcomes. I have a lot to learn and this seems like a great resource to learn it. The area we live in used to be the egg capital of the country. Many homes in our area have old commercial coops in the yard. Unfortunately I don't know of any that are active any more. But, he good side is that several farm and garden type stores in the area are pushing for back yard flocks. The hobby is gaining popularity in the area just like gardens.
I would love to hear from anybody in S. NJ (or anyplace else) about how they are doing the hobby.
