Hello from NOLA

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Do you have a breed preference?
I've picked a few I wanted to get. I want a couple that are nice looking, like a silkie and maybe a buff laced polish. I also wanted a couple for nice eggs, like an easter egger and an olive or dark brown egger. Then I was thinking of maybe like a Golden Comet, as a workhorse for more eggs. What do you guys suggest? I've picked out my coop design, and will make it large enough for six with a little extra space for their comfort.

Silkies and Polish are nice, docile breeds, and Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers, or chocolate egg layers like Marans or Welsummers will certainly give you a colorful egg basket. Golden Comet is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links and they are egg laying machines. Another workhorse for eggs you might want to consider are Black Sex Links (Black Stars). Mine have been friendlier than my Red Sex Links (Golden Comets) and they are just as good a layers (even a little better in really cold winter weather). Just a word of caution though. Silkies and Polish will do great together, but I wouldn't advise mixing them in a flock with the other breeds on your list or they will likely take a beating (Silkies because of their smaller size and Polish because of their elaborate crests). I had both Silkies and Polish and we ended up having to separate them from our other chickens and keep them together in their own separate enclosure. Whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

I hadn't considered their sizes. That's a shame as we were excited about them! What if my flock consists of:

Blue Copper Maran
Golden Comet
Black Lace Wynadotte
Barred Rock
Araucana

I may not get exactly one of each, but do these breeds do well together? I want nice, colorful eggs, but not at the expense of my flock's health.

Those breeds will all do fine together as long as they are not overcrowded. Just be sure you have a minimum floor area of 4 sq. ft. per bird in the coop (not counting the space taken up by the nesting boxes) and 10 sq. ft. per bird in the run. These are bare minimums; more is better as overcrowding will quickly lead to aggression, fights, biting and feather plucking, and even cannibalism. You will definitely have a colorful egg basket with those five breeds.

I already spoke to ejsharp, and he was BEYOND helpful with this design, and I plan to make a modified version of this:

I plan to make it taller to accommodate my height, (I'm 6'4") and wider/longer to have a few more chickens. Also plan to put on a tin roof, extend the roof over the nest box, and paint it navy blue. Still, I LOVE this design!

It's a nice looking coop/run and it's good that uses hardware cloth instead of chicken wire so that it's predator proof. Just be sure and expand it so that it's plenty large enough to house five chickens without them being overcrowded.

I was gonna make it 8' at the highest point, then make the base 5'x12' with a 5'x5' coop.
