In a few weeks I will be getting my first chicken flock. Finished the coop and will be putting up the fencing. I hope to allow them to free range in my garden. Not sure as to what type of breed I am getting, still doing research. I don't think I will start out with chicks, looking more for pullets.

I am a stay at home wife and have to adult sons. I like to sew, knit, crochet, and cross stitch. And I dabble a little in photography.

I also volunteer with a local horse rescue sanctuary. My profile picture is one of my favorite mare.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Great avatar; I love horses and your mare is beautiful. Murray McMurray has an excellent "chick selector" tool at https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html to help you determine which breed is best for you. Just be sure and click on "show more characteristics." Even if you don't buy your birds from Murray, the "chick selector" is still a valuable tool to use. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your flock.

) That's so cool that you volunteer at a horse sanctuary! I used to work at a local stable a few years ago. I loved it!

Congrats on finishing the coop! What kind of chickens are looking for? Pets? Hens who will lay tons of eggs? Meat for the table? Birds to take to the show? All these questions need to be answered in order to find your perfect, ideal breed! Feel free to check out these helpful chicken picking links!
