Hi all. I've wanted chickens for a while but the place I live on is provided by my employer. I live on the farm I work at. He kept saying no he didnt want them running around here. His mother had hundreds of chickens at one time and he was tired of them. Well as soon as we heard that some companies were sending chickens to China for processing I looked at him and said I am going to buy some chickens. He said ok go for it.
I only have a dozen chickens and 5 ducks. Everything is working out so far. We are headed into out first winter with chickens. We had chickens, ducks and geese as kids so I'm not totally green but that was near 30 years ago.
We found out that our son is allergic to chicken eggs but can have duck. So Thats why we got ducks.
I want to get a couple geese in the spring and a couple dozen broilers. I'm in the process of adding a second chicken coop. So I will have one for layers and one for broilers and ducks and geese. The ducks and geese will have to move to the barn temporally while I have broilers. But that's only a few weeks.
I prefer to grind my own feed. Exept starter. I buy that. We raise corn so I get that free. Why buy feed with corn in it when I have that already. I have acess to a grinder mixer. Just as well use it.
I am open minded and eager to learn new things this seems like the place to do that.
