Hello from Northeast Ohio :)

Wow! I remember reading somewhere that people had them to protect their chickens from coyotes because llamas are really aggressive towards the coyotes. Is that correct? Do they stomp and kick or does their size scare them off?

Thank you all for Welcoming me to
This forum ! This will be not only a great resource to research chickens, but it's going to be FUN , too !

:)

I found the video from the BBC that I saw that shows a guard llama and donkey protecting sheep from a coyote. There is no violence.

O wow, thanks for sharing. Looks like we'll be getting some Llamas very soon.

We have Great Pyrenees and Min donkeys that guard. We have to keep them in separate pastures because the donkeys chase the Pyrs even though the Pyrs are bigger. If a little dog gets in the pasture with the donkeys it is on. Our Corgi was rolled and our French Bulldog was chased all the way back to the house by one of our donkeys.

Hello! I tried posting to individual responses earlier , but for some reason .... They didn't post. Sorry guys !

If you're going to get a guard llama, only get one. When there is more than one , they don't " guard" as well. They need another animal to keep them happy bc they are pack camelids. A goat, sheep, etc. I don't knowing chickens would do the trick. Hmmmmm .....

Not all llamas are meant to be guard llamas. Make sure you research them and contact some llama breeders. There is such a thing as " Berserk Male Syndrome", so I'd make sure it's a gelded llama. ( I'm really not making that up LOL). The video you watched May not have seemed " violent" but if the warning is not enough.... They can easily rear up and stomp on a person or animal.

Let me tell ya, they can storm a fence at a cat in a split second. Their size alone would be Intimidating if I saw one running towards me. Phoenix is my doll baby bc he trusts me and I handle him every day. Also make sure your llama is halter trained... If it wasn't when it was younger it's going to be a pistol to handle ( if you can handle one by yourself ) at 400 lbs. Do your research first.

If anyone could give me some kind of inkling on a type of chick I have, I'd appreciate it. TSC claimed it to be a Blue Leghorn but it's definitely not going to be a blue. ( see avatar pics. I have two of them posted). You can't really see it in the picture but all three of the brown chicks have a black line across the beak right under their nostrils. ( are they called nostrils on a chicken?)

Thank you in advance !!!:thumbsup

When I saw the Llama notice the coyote in the video I knew he was ready to protect those sheep. He perked right up! Thanks for all the guard Llama info, I'm sure a lot of people will find your post helpful.

I don't know about your chicks breed, but I agree she's not blue. She looks a lot like my Speckled Sussex chicks. They kind of look like a chipmunk with their colors and stripes. I have Speckled Sussex and Silver Sussex I breed and they are always very calm and friendly.
