April Z
In the Brooder
Hi everyone, I'm April, and I live on a wooded acrage tucked into the woods of northern Minnesota.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
No, I got my first chickens about 18 years ago, and raised mostly common heritage breeds - Barred rocks, Orpingtons, Doms, etc. Since moving to MN, I was a bit nervous getting them again, since I was very concerned about predators. However, I've had far fewer issues here than I did back in farm country.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Oh boy...let's see here....roughly 60? Of course, about 25 of them are broilers that have a couple weeks left, so that number will be dropping quickly.
(3) What breeds do you have? I have Speckled Sussexes, Ameraucanas, RIRs, Bielefelders, and Niederrheiners. Humble brag, I didn't have to look up the spelling for the last two, so yeah, I'm all that...LOL!!!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Oh wow, where do I start? I think I could use the blanket statement of "they're cheap entertainment", but obviously, I like being able to produce my own organic meat and eggs, and it's just fun learning their endless little nuances.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Gardening, soap making, archery, canoeing.... it's a long list, I tend to be a pretty curious person.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I live on 23 acres, mostly wooded, and butted up next to a small lake, so it's a pretty diverse little ecosystem I have going on out here. I live with my husband, and our German Shepherd, Sasha. We're self-employed (small CPA firm) and I work from home, with is wonderful, but sometimes gives my just enough flexibility to get into a little trouble...lol!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? Well, when every chicken question I google inevitably leads me back to a BYC thread, I figured I should just cut out the middle man and join!
