Hello!
I just joined because I suspected one of my pullets of actually being a cockrel .. and he is! My man doesn't want to have a rooster because he doesn't like the idea of eating eggs that are fertilized.. but I have grown attached to him and think he would be good protection for the girls. What are some good arguments I can use to prove that the eggs will be fine to eat?

Welcome to BYC!

Oh lots of people eat fertile eggs. And some claim they even taste better! They are not incubated yet, so there is no development inside the egg. That is how the old timers did it and ate their fertile eggs since every flock had a rooster. Only in these modern times do we eat non fertile eggs.

Here is a thread on this question and maybe you can get some info here to show the hubby....

As for roosters protecting your flock, they are more like alarms for the hens. They rarely dive in and rescue a bird from the clutches of a predator. And some roosters can be mean to you and the hens. So keep this all in mind.

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Hello and :welcome
I always find that a little silly because it does not affect anything about how the eggs will taste... Plus then if you wanted you could hatch out chicks! And it is just like eating what the hens and rosters produce so it should be just as weird to eat a non-fertilized egg as a fertilized one. Or very close... If you know what I mean?
Enjoy your flock and roosters can be really fun!
