Hi! My husband and I are newbie chicken farmers here in northern Illinois. We live in a small town of about 2000 people, and an ordinance was just passed in July that allows us to have laying hens within village limits, so we built our coop and we've had our 6 hens for about 3 weeks now. They were between 5-6 months old already when we got them, and we've been getting eggs since day 2, at first 2 eggs a day, then the next week 3 eggs a day, and most of the last week 4 eggs a day. My grandparents lived on a farm when I was growing up, so there's a little bit of farming in my blood, but I've never personally raised chickens before. I've been lurking on this website for the last couple months and the information we've found here has been invaluable! I can't wait to get some pictures posted of our coop and chickens, we've been having so much fun taking care of and watching these little ladies every day. I must say, they're so spoiled already, I think half of my grocery bill was just for treats for them! (lettuce, cabbage, apples, peaches....) They sure love their treats!
