Hello everyone from the north woods of MN!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

First got chickens a year ago to eat bugs and ticks in our yard on our acreage in the north woods. The first year was a wonderful and hard lesson in how to raise and care for a flock in the woods.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We have 7 chickens right now. 1 year-old laying hen (Sue) and 6 three week old chicks who we added a few weeks ago (Cora, Ronnie, Cutie, Snowy, Cottonball, and CCC Junior).

(3) What breeds do you have?

I believe the laying hen we have is a Rhode Island Red. She's very friendly, great layer, since the start of April we've gotten one brown egg every morning.

The six chicks are a mixed bag. I'm fairly certain we have one Easter Egger, one Black Cochin, and one Buff Orpington. The other three I'll be posting in the Chicken Breeds section for all of your input.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I love watching them throughout the day as they roam around the yard, scratching at leaf piles, chasing each other around. It's fun when they come running up to me anytime I come outside. Getting fresh eggs each day. They are wonderful pets to have around.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Gardening, camping/hiking, exploring the woods, chopping wood, playing basketball

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

We moved up to the North Woods of MN by the headwaters of the mississipi 2 years ago. Went from city life to rural woods life. My wife, daughter, & I live on 5 acres in the woods with our dog and our chicken flock.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

Found BYC on Google
