Hello! I am so glad I found this forum! I have peeked at it now and then, but had pretty much decided not to do the chicken thing. This past week I just dove in anyway! It's so unlike me - I'm an avid researcher (Google is a dream come true) by nature so for me to fly by the seat of my pants like this is crazy. And, of course, I not only got 8 chicks (4 Barred Rocks & 4 Buff Orpingtons), but I also decided I'd incubate some Guinea eggs too! I'm still a little unsure about the Guinea thing, but I'll never know until I try it. If they eat stink bugs and ticks I'm liable to put up with the noise. I'm hoping we'll end up with 4 hens. Picking up the Guinea eggs tonight for my LG incubator... My DH is being so patient! I probably should find a prebuilt coop on craigslist rather than give him another project!

We have 6 guineas & wanting more. They're not for everyone because they are very noisy, but most people that have guineas love them.

from Wisconsin !!

You picked two good layer breeds to start out with that will give you nice brown eggs.

And I think you'll love the guineas !! I know I do. They are a riot to watch. Check out the Guineas thread to read more about them. I learned yesterday that if the guinea roos will pick on chicken roosters this time of year (breeding) but if you have more Guinea roos than hens they will be to busy fussying over their hens that they will leave your chicken roosters alone. And they also say to have at least 10 guineas !!! I have 11 and they just started laying eggs !! Can't wait to hatch some more out. I just told DH that if I had to get rid of everything and only keep one breed I think I might just keep the guineas !! They have the cutest, ugly faces that only a mother could love !!

I love them !!! But, I have noisey parrots in the house so noisey birds outside are no big deal to me !!!
