I would suggest a ton of reading and then a ton more! LOL
Once you decide how many to start with I would suggest clicking on the breeds link at the top of the page to help you narrow down the birds you think are right for you.
We started with a mixed group of about a dozen... we are getting a few more of 2 more breeds we want to try. Rather than looking to get all one breed you may want to get a mix of 3 breeds (or more) to raise for the first year or two till you figure out exactly what characteristics you really want... there are a lot of 'dual' purpose bird breeds that may work well for you, so have fun experimenting!
