Hi everyone,
I have been interested in keeping chickens for years. Finally this spring we are ready to go ahead and today construction started on the coop. I have looked at designs for years and we are building something that has several features that appeal to our specific climate and lifestyle as well as providing healthy quarters for the flock. The day old chicks arrive in the mail on May 17th. We are several hours drive away from farm country so it is difficult at best to acquire straw for bedding. I have learned that people are using wood pellets, the same used for fuel in pellet stoves as bedding for horses. What about for chickens. I am concerned about them eating it. Especially the chicks.
I am happy to join this group ,

I am finding that sand is a better bedding for chicks. I use a cat litter scoop to clean the brooder. And Welcome to BYC!!!
