I'm a newbie from the city We moved to a small town in Nova Scotia last year.

A couple of months ago I decided I wanted chickens and about 2 weeks ago I happened to drive by a farm that was for sale and they had a sign saying chickens for sale so I stopped in thinking that if I wanted a couple of hens I could pick them up later. A half hour later I was driving home with 3 Red Star hens, 1 Red Star Rooster and 2 White Leghorn hens (I'm questioning if 1 of them is something else) in the back of the van! I grabbed my cell phone and called a carpenter friend and he met me at home. 2 hours later he had sectioned off a portion of our old garage and cut a hole to the outside. He came back later with a little door and some fencing. The next day we had 4 perfect eggs and I'm a rock star in the eyes of my children.

The children and I have spent hours watching them. They are an endless source of entertainment. The Leghorn is very disobedient and takes a lot of scolding from the rooster but she's always perched beside him in the evening.

I'm so glad we've taken on this adventure.

Thank you to all of you! Everyone has such great advice!

Cheers!

:welcomeWelcome farmgirlwanabe -- love your username! Your story of bringing home chickens is a lot like my 'bringing-home-kittens' experience. DH was none too thrilled at the time but now he adores them. Good luck with your new chickens--I'm envious you already have eggs. We have another month to go before ours begin laying.
