good morning all. My fiancee and i are new to raising chickens and wonder what would be a good dual purpose breed for in the mountains of NW Ga. been doing some research, and we are kind of leaning towards either bard rock, plymouth rock, or rhode island reds. any help on this would be very appreciated. thanks in advance !

i love barred rocks, they are really calm, docile, and friendly! they lay well ( a medium brown egg), and they are VERY cold hardy! RIR's are also cold hardy, lay well(a JUMBO brown egg), but i have no idea about their personalities, i would also reccomend buff orpingtons

very cool. thanks a bunch. def have to check out the orpingtons. never had heard of them before.

if you're looking for a blue egg, i would recommend an ameraucana, they lay well, a blue egg, and they are cold hardy. they are also fun and friendly ( i dont know too much about this breed, mine is still young )

I have Large Fowl orpingtons(there is also the bantam version). They are very nice docile birds that takes the heat and confinement very well. There a whole bunch of nice orpington breeder in GA. Personally I like the LF Imported. The imported are extra large and fluffy. If you look through the forum you will find some of the people in GA that have imports have roos weighing about 18lbs. Normal orps roo weighs about 11lbs.

thanks everybody for the warm welcome, and especially for the information so far. i am very glad that i stumbled upon this site.
