Welcome Jason! We are in Ellijay, Ga, where are you? We have a small flock of Buff Orpingtons (BO), Plymouth Rocks (PR), and Rhode Island Reds (RIR) plus 1 Gold Laced Wyandott (GLW). All do well in our climate and lay lovely brown eggs. The BOs are my favorite. Our chicks came from Ideal Hatchery via Brown's Farm and Feed in Blue Ridge. Buying straight run chicks ( all the same sex ) is not a bad way to start because you don't have to worry about excess roos. After several years experience we would now start a flock with local chicks from a good breeder because we are willing to put the excess roos in freezer camp. If you want to grow some chickens for meat, I would find a local breeder for staight run chicks. One of our BOs has gone broody and we have fingers crossed for some chicks.
