Hello all -
New chicken owner here in the Hudson Valley, NY. Bought a house in March, had chickens by April!
My lovely boyfriend built me a coop from scratch - I went out & purchased 6 chicks from a local food store (3 New Hampshire Reds, 2 Black Australops, 1 Light Brown Leghorn) & then 5 more chicks (3 Silkies, 2 Buff Orpington) & 3 ducks (3 Khaki Campbells) from TSC.
I unfortunately ended up with 2 New Hampshire Red roos, 3 Silkie roos & 1 Buff Orp roo.

I've re-homed all but 1 Silkie roo & 1 Buff Orp roo at this point. Two of the Khakis turned out to be drakes as well.

I'm interested in breeding & letting my chickens do their thing as far as rearing their own chicks. My chickens/ducks are free range all day, with coop/run at night.

It's an experience that's for sure!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Congrats on your flock! Sounds like you have some lovely breeds! Sorry you had to re-home the silkie, buff orpington and two ducks. Good luck with your plans to breed and have your hens raise their own young. Definitely feel free to ask any questions. We are happy to help.

I like your avatar! What a cute cat!

Welcome! If you have an un-anticipated roo, good it's a Buff! Such sweet friendly birds. Sounds like a great flock! I love my Black Australop too. If I can contribute to your chicken delinquency, may I suggest Cuckoo Marin, crazy funny friendly bird lays big chocolate brown eggs. I also enjoy the Wyandottes. Beautiful birds. Good luck with your flock! BYC has been so helpful to me. Just ask! Someone is always there to help.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a nice mix of breeds. Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and excellent layers of large, brown eggs. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Thanks, that's my bottle baby Lennox. He just turned 2 & is a true terror.

I was actually planning on keeping a Red roo, but holy smokes did they get aggressive fast. I was planning on getting rid of the Buff Orp, but was talked into keeping it by a more experienced chicken keeper. So far he's getting along well.

I love having variety, lol. I do not think I could have a flock of a single breed! I love having one or two of many different breeds.

Welcome to BYC. It's great when a broody hen raises her own chicks but, not all breeds go broody. Your best chances are with Buff orps, cochins, and silkies. Even then, they go broody on their terms - you can't make it happen.
