On May 3, 2020 we received a call from the post office that there was a chirping box with our name on it that we could pick up at the back door (it was a Sunday) and my wife and I started raising chickens for the first time with a flock of 20. 10 Black Australorps and 10 Buff Orpington hens.

We have always thought that it would be a good idea to raise a few chickens in order to bring us a step closer to self-sufficiency. The recent political events and shortages resulting from the virus hysteria made us decide that it was a good time to act rather than just think!

As a part of our self-sufficiency theme, we grow a large garden for canning and sharing with friends and neighbors and my wife makes and sells handmade soaps. I love to build stuff. So, converting our 10 X 12 garden shed into a coop and building an 8 x 24' run were more fun than I'll admit!

Our Shi Tzu, who thinks that he's a Rottweiler, Gizmo seems to like his new sisters, but I'm afraid that his idea of playing and theirs may be a little different than theirs. He also seems to be quite jealous when the Orpingtons postion themsleves over my hand to be picked up and petted. So, their interaction can only take place through hardware cloth! At least until the chickens grow to about twice his size!

We found Backyard Chickens while researching to get ready to start our flock. After a winter spent reading the posts and articles here, we were well-prepared when our chicks arrived and, so far, are performing like seasoned chicken keepers!

Great choices! I have a cat named Gizmo!
