Hello All!

I’d like to say hello to everyone, from South-East Ohio. I’ve wanted chickens all my life and after buying my first home a couple years ago, my husband and I finally had the time to build a coop and get our first chickens this March. We started out with 4 Buff Orpingtons, (now 6 month old hens) and currently have 11 other chicks that are 4-5 weeks old. They’re straight run, and I think mostly roosters :( (5 Black Australorps, 5 Light Brahmas, 1 Buff Orpington). I’m going to post a thread to try to re-home all the roosters, as we can’t keep them in town.

These past 6 months, chickens have totally won my heart. They are sweet and intelligent animals and have been great pets, the delicious eggs are a great bonus! As a kid I always wanted to have pet chickens but was never allowed. Now, I can’t wait to get more and learn about all the different breeds. There are so many out there!

Aside from keeping chickens, I enjoy hiking with my husband and our dog and spending time with our four cats.

After renovating our first house together, which took the better part of two years, as we did most things ourselves, we finally got around to working and transforming the backyard into a mini-farm. We built a privacy fence and an enclosed coop and run. I started a large organic garden this spring and can’t wait to continue to learn about gardening and permaculture.

After reading and gaining so much information about chickens from this website in the past 6 months, I decided it’s time to make an account and join the community. Thank you BYC for all the great insights and knowledge. I’ve learned a lot and I hope to share my stories and knowledge along the way.

Thanks for reading,

Amanda

PS. My username are the names of my two favorite chickens, Olive and Gladys.
