Thanks everyone for the warm and I would say friendly welcome. I tried to define myself by the chickens that own me.

I live in south central Ohio in Ross county. We have about 13 acres more or less. The fields are small, but we cash rent those to a farmer. I do grow field corn for my own use for feeding chickens and pigs. We garden quite a sizable amount of space too. We have lived here since 2004, before that we lived on just under an acre. I kept chickens on and off at that location, also pigs and goats.

I'm 64 years old and have been disabled for a few years, but I try not to let that control my hobbies. My wife is a big help and our son and his wife and child live in a home across the drive. We share the work around the mini-farm. DIL also has chickens and we raise them for food as much as just enjoy having them around. She lets hers free range, I do on occasions but mostly they are contained in a rather large fenced lot. This fall I lost a young pullet to a hawk, so I would rather keep my birds contained to a point and not feed the hawks.

Someone asked about the trapper thing. Yes, I have trapped in the past, but not for fur since I became disabled. Well, I do have live traps for removing critters like raccoons that come around trying to be the little bandits they are.

I belong to other forums, but not many people on those are into chickens. Unless buying case lots of stuff for stocking up, they wouldn't know the personal involvement of actually producing their own food.

And again thanks to all for the warm welcome, I'm trying to learn my way around the forum as it is laid out differently than the ones I'm used to.

Welcome from a newbie in Kentucky! I look forward to learning from your experience. I, too, keep my 4 girls in a pen for fear of predators, but the pen is very large. It started as a 10x50 pen, but we enlarged it this weekend because I want to add 2 or 3 more hens. I think we added about another 15x15 space. I want my chickens to roam as much as possible within the limits of safety.
