Hi Miranda and welcome to BYC! I am also getting meat chickens for the first time this year and decided to go with the Cornish X... And then I read, and read, and read, lol, and met some wonderful people from Ohio who introduced me to the Buckeye Breed. I am very excited to report that hopefully within the next 2 years I will be able to hatch, grow out, and process my own chickens for eggs and meat, all from this great breed!
While I know that this decision would not work for everyone I am simply suggesting that you take your time to read over the thousands of posts here, and from whatever resources you have, to do what works well for your family. I think that is the beauty of chicken farming / raising, you can make up your own rules as you go... for the most part that is, lol.
Good Luck with your endeavors and I hope you and your family have fun!
