I've lurked on BYC for a couple of years...it's been about 10 or so since we've had chickens, and we didn't even have a coop, they just hung out in the garage or barn and total free ranged. A couple of years ago I thought about building myself a coop out near the horse barn and getting some chickens because I enjoyed our RIR's we had several years back.
This past year, my mom was hounding me on what she could get me for Christmas....and I said a chicken coop...
What do you know, she had my uncle build me one (he built my barn and her house...so a coop was easy for him!) I pulled into her driveway on Christmas Eve morning to feed my horses and he was unloading it next to the garage! They'll be in it at night, but have freedom during the day. The coop does have a small run attached to it already, but I want them to be able to get out often as well.
Today, I just placed my order for 25 chicks. I got a small mixture of breeds and can't wait to get them. They should arrive April 21 or 22. I have Buckeyes, Cuckoo Marans, Black Australorps, Buff Brahmas, Barred Plymouth Rocks and Easter Eggers on their way to me!
I want to give them the best start possible and continue to do best for them in all aspects so I figured I might as well just join BYC instead of lurking.
I hope to make plenty of awesome friends on here and learn even more about chickens and the care they need to keep them healthy in body and mind.
