Hi there! I just joined the board this morning We live within the city limits so have robe careful about what we do. I'm starting out with two baby girls - I'm getting a black rock and I'm not sure what the other one will be yet . Tomorrow we are starting on building a coop. I'm super excited!

Welcome to BYC. I would suggest getting 3 chicks - that way if something happens to one the others remain as a 'flock' for companionship. Good luck with your chicks.

Sourland X2. Not all chicks make it to adulthood. I started with 4 of them in case one didn't make it. That way there would be at least 3 of them. Chickens are very social creatures and need companionship of other birds. There is a pecking order as well and a flock of 3 or 4 keeps this order in, well, good order. LOL

You might want to do some reading in our learning center here on BYC for lots of great tips on raising your new babies, building the coop, feeding your adult birds and keeping the happy, healthy and safe...
