Hello, just wanted to introduce myself here. I've lurked for a bit and got some great info from this forum, so I decided its time to join!

My boyfriend Matt and I moved into our 5 acre mini farm last year, and are now learning the ropes. I have an extensive background in horses, but this is my first chicken and duck adventure. This spring, when TSC got their shipments of little peepers, my boyfriend bought 18 chicks. We went back the next week and they had pekin ducklings, and I had to have some. (I've always loved ducks) So we got six of those. Next time, they had Khaki Campbell's.... Somehow I convinced Matt that we needed 8 of those too. So we ended up with 32 adorable fluff balls living in our bathroom.

Fast forward to today... The chickens free range over our 5 acres during the day, and return to be closed in the barn at night. The ducks have the option to free range, but they almost never leave their little side yard with their pond.

Just this past week the hens have started to lay eggs. (Anywhere that isn't inside their nest boxes... Go figure) Matt was surprised to find one on his tool bench!

Just wanted to drop by and say thanks for this awesome forum, and I look forward to participating, as this hobby has become rather addictive!

So glad you are enjoying your flock! And yes, poultry are highly addicting! The only cure I can think of is more poultry.

Welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! If you want your girls to lay in the nest box, try keeping them locked up in the coop/run for a week or so, and put some golf balls in the nesting area. This will help train them where they are supposed to lay. Best of luck to you!

Welcome to BYC! Few BYC members are immune to chicken math (or maybe in your case, duck math). :o) I'm a chicken person and don't know much about ducks (although I've had a few), but I have to admit that ducklings are the ultimate in cute. What kind of chickens do you have?

When they free range, they just end up laying eggs wherever they happen to be. Maybe if you keep them in a little longer in the morning, they will lay eggs before free ranging.

Welcome to BYC
