Wow thanks for all the warm welcomes!! Having Internet issues so I was just able to check back here!

We have started keeping the girls in for an extra hour in the mornings, and some of them have decided that the boxes make decent laying spots. Over half of them just plop eggs all over the place still... I said its kind of like an Easter egg hunt every morning! I don't really mind...
One of the girls has decided that the work bench belongs to her, though, and lays eggs there every day. Matt has to be sneaky when he needs to get his tools... She doesn't appreciate the intrusion into her newly claimed nest site! Haha.

To answer an above question: we have a mix of white leghorns (I think!) Rhode Island reds, and barred rocks. We got the RIRs and BRs as sexed pullets, and the leghorns were straight run, so we ended up with 7 roosters! Luckily they all seem to get along for the most part. They protect their girls really well too. If one of the hens makes an "upset" noise, you'll see a bunch of roos go running that way to see what's going on!

Actually the girl in your picture is a Red Sex Link, a hybrid produced by crossing a RIR rooster with a silver gene hen (pure Rhode Island Reds lack the white feathers and have black feathers in the tails). I've had a number of Red Sex Links over the years and they are egg laying machines. You will love them. Good luck with your flock.
 
Hey, thanks for the info. We got these guys (on a whim) from tractor supply, and I'm only going by what they told us. Haha. I wonder if the others are what they told us they were.
