Hello! I'm Stefani and I'm a single mom of 4 that lives out in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma. I had no idea what I was doing when I moved to the country, but I love it and wouldn't change it for the world (tip - don't buy 5 acres if all you have is a push mower - the first summer was no fun).
I decided I wanted chickens and ended up with 51 guineas (they were on sale), and raised those crazy babies, sold a few, gave half to my bf, and then on Sunday those darn birds disappeared - all 21 of them! They had been free ranging for months and coming home every night to coop and then poof. All gone. We searched 20 acres (with my neighbors permission) and drove a square mile and not a single feather or a sound.
Anyway, the guineas got me started on my bird addiction. So I wanted chickens after I was all proud of myself for raising 51 guineas without losing any (before the guinea rapture) but it was late in the season (about 2 weeks ago) and my friend had one nest left of chicks to hatch. Well she said i didn't look like they were going to hatch so she asked me if I had ever thought about ducks. After a little research I became addicted to quack and went on a search for ducks. I found 6 little leftovers at Atwoods and adopted them all (the only ducks I could find in a 2 hour radius). Then the next day my friends eggs hatched, so I adopted them as well. So now I have 11 chicks (barnyard mix) and 6 ducks (leftover mix - 5 of the 6 have some sort of crest spot). And I may or may not have ordered 19 more ducks to be delivered in August.
So I'm here to learn anything and everything I can about chicks, ducks, guineas (I'm going to try again next year with maybe only 10 or so - can't handle the heartbreak of losing any more this year) and any other bird that I don't know that I need yet.
I also have 3 dogs (cane corso, lab/chow mix, and a king charles spaniel) and a turtle. The turtle and the lab don't care about my new obsession, my cane corso already thinks I pay too much attention to everything else other than her (but she's trying real hard to behave about the birds), and my spaniel can't figure out why none of the chicks/ducks/guineas (when they were here) want to play with him.
So thanks for having me here! Can't wait to learn more about what i got myself in to!
