Hi! I’m new to keeping chickens. I was given 5 newly hatched chicks by a friend in March but we didn’t know how to sex them. 3 of the 5 started crowing and developed cockerel characteristics, so I rehomed two of them. My remaining cockerel developed beautiful red and orange feathers on his grey body, which are still coming in. I bought 3 three week old pullets at a poultry exchange event in the parking lot Atwood’s but by the time they were 9 weeks old, one ended up being a bantam and another started crowing. I gave the cockerel to a friend and kept the pullets.

So I currently have one cockerel and three pullets plus one bantam pullet. The grey ones my friend said are Easter Egger/Marans mixes. The black and tan pullets I was told were Easter Eggers as well. They are so much fun! Who knew chickens had great personalities? Backyard chickens has been so helpful in learning how to care for them! I am hoping to add a few more pullets to my flock with about ten chickens being the goal.
