Hello everyone. My wife and I just ordered a dozen chicks after plenty of research on here. We figured we might as well sign up as I'm sure we will have questions in the future.

Thanks everyone,

Is putting a cover over the run really needed?

Usually a cover is for keeping chickens in or for predator proofing ... so it depends on what you are dealing with in your area predator wise and if your chickens will be able to fly out of the run.

A cover will keep hawks from taking off with your chickens, raccoons from dropping off branches into your coop, providing shade/ snow/sleet/rain protection and keeping high fliers inside. Yes, I'd say a cover is very useful

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, predators are a real concern. Everything eats chickens. And the last thing you want to find is your flock completely devastated. So do your best to protect your birds with a roof on your run.

Enjoy your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!
