My husband and I decided to jump into backyard chickens 2.5 years ago. We had a beautiful coop made for our anniversary present. We started out on less than 1/2 acre in Durham, NC. The kids, and especially our daughter, adored our chicks. We have a happy flock of 2 Rhodies and 2 Ameraucanas which we know understand is lucky as it's not great to mix breeds of chickens. Late this summer, we relocated to Union County to 3 acres and moved the coop and ladies. Good to join up with other chicken lovers!

Welcome to BYC! I think it's fine to mix breeds, however crested breeds tend to get picked on since they can't see very well. Congrats on your new home :)

I have a couple mixed flocks and it is just fine. I just separate my breeding flocks when I wish to hatch out chicks.

Hi there,

and welcome to BYC!

X2 on what Liz said about the crested birds. But it sure is fun to have many different types of breeds.

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!

We're glad to have you. Its not always a bad idea to mix birds- as long as you don't have a bird at a disadvantage, like crested birds or Silkies, they often get along fine. I have a mixed flock with three different breeds.
