Hi there.

I wanted to introduce myself as I have just adopted two chickens who are about 13 weeks old. I have (clearly) never looked after a chicken before.

They have a coop and I have built them a run. I let them wonder around the garden when the dogs are inside. For the first time today I introduced them to the dogs and all seemed fine but I will build up their contact gradually.

I currently feed them pellets for their age group twice a day and some 'chicken chocolate' I was told was a real treat for them. I also give them sweet corn.

I was wondering if there is somewhere on this site which could tell me exactly what is and isn't safe to give them from human fruit and veg etc. I would love to give them a varied diet on top of the pellets and make sure they are as happy and healthy as possible.

Also how are they in the heat? How do they keep cool apart from in. The shade of the coop? - water bath???

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Warm regards,
Catherine, not forgetting Cinnamon and Nutmeg

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! A great place to start is the BYC Learning Center, lots of nice articles on all aspects of poultry keeping you will find helpful https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center and there is a nice Chicken Treat chart on there that lists a lot of things chickens like, there are a few things on the bottom they should not eat, but pretty much anything you can eat, chickens can also. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-treat-chart-the-best-treats-for-backyard-chickens
If you do a search there are a number of threads on keeping chickens cool, you may find some tips that will work with your coop/run set up https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/788391/keeping-chickens-cool-in-summer-heat

Welcome to BYC!

Kelsie really has you on the right path for some good reading. Good luck with all your poultry projects and welcome to our flock!

Thank you so much for sharing those lists. The treat table is exactly what I was looking for, I can print it off and stick it up in the kitchen. I mixed their food with natural yoghurt and noodles yesterday and they loved it!

Really fab ideas for keeping the chicks cool too.

Feeling a little more confident.

Just want them to be happy and healthy.

Xxxxx
