Hi, everyone! I'm a new member here, and relatively new to owning chickens. We (my husband Steve and I) currently have four Buff Orpington's, and have 3 Barred Rocks on the way...all hens for our own egg consumption. It became important to us to get our own chicks as we learned what mass egg production does with all of their chickens, regardless of how they're labeled.
First, we care about the source of our food, so unstressed and truly cage-free, free-range chickens for our eggs was important. Second, we care about animals enough to want to treat all of ours well, and hate to see animals being abused or mistreated. Supporting that by continuing to eat store-bought eggs was unimaginable to us. Third, we seek to live a more sustainable lifestyle, so we want to start growing as much of our own food as possible, and chickens are a great place to start in our suburban neighborhood until we can relocate to much more acreage next year (we hope!).
We have a lot to learn so I look forward to researching the forums for help when we need it, or asking the questions if I don't find a thread already started.
Love and Light,
~Dru
