Hello everyone!

I finally talked my wife into some chickens so here I am. We purchased from our local feed store last night and the kids are really enjoying the chicks...especially my 6 year old daughter! She wants to spend all of her free time playing with them. She had to check on them first thing this morning just to make sure they were ok. I've stated with 6 chicks and they are all just about a week old now. I picked up a silver laced Wyandotte, a Rhode Island Red, 2 barred rocks and 2 golden comets. The feed store said the chicks came from Ridgway Hatchery. We are very excited for this new venture and to get to see them grow and have their personalities show. So far the Wyandotte seems to be the most laid back and really enjoys being held. We'll see what happens as the grow up.

So since this is our first time with chickens I want to hear any tips that you all have! What kind of treats do your chickens like. Anything special I need to be doing for the chicks as they are growing up? Anything at all you have I want to hear it!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. Please have your daughter play with the chicks on the floor. They are fast and erratic in movement. If they fall from that table, they will be injured or dead - not fun at all.

Will do. She has been. That table was really for picture purposes only!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Your daughter certainly is cute. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your chicks.

Congrats on your chicks! You have picked out some great breeds and I can tell your daughter is really enjoying them! I remember when I got my first chicks, all I wanted to do was spend time with them. It's good that she is holding them and hanging out with them so much; they will probably be very tame once they are all grown up. Wyandottes are generally very docile so it makes sense that she is the most willing to be held.

Have you checked out our learning center yet? It is packed full of helpful info on raising chickens. Here is the link along with a few articles to read

It's best not to give young chicks a lot of treats even though it can be tempting!

Just stick with their chick food until they are around 4 weeks. Then they can have foods like fruits, veggies, breads, rice, pasta, etc. However they can have some scrambled egg or oatmeal right now. Here is a good link on treats for chickens
