A couple months ago my daughter and I worked around my husband and bought four little "Sex Linked Golden" pullets. They were 16-18 months old we were told. The feed mill where we bought them threw in a free rooster. They found a home in one of the barn's stalls which had already been enclosed with chicken wire and sports a couple mangers, perfect for nesting, and some 2x4s for roosting. We decided to go with a deep layer of pine shavings and it is working well. Most of the poop accumulates under where they roost at night.
The pullets started laying eggs within two weeks. At first the eggs were small, particularly the yolks. The eggs are getting bigger and we pretty much get four medium to jumbo most every day.
The hens are beautiful and so is the rooster (of unknown genetics). We didn't realize that chickens have such personalities and we enjoy them so much as pets. As you can see from the picture, my husband soon came around, calls them "The children" and proudly brings the eggs home every morning after opening the barn's door. They just love meal worms which is what my husband is feeding them in the picture.
Yesterday one of the girls laid an unbelievable egg. It weighed in at 4ozs way more than a jumbo. Does anybody know if hens feel pain when they lay an egg? If they do, this poor hen must not have had too good a time.
This forum is great. I learned a lot from everybody before getting the chickens. Thank you.
