There are some nice older threads on keeping chickens cool in hot weather you might like to check out and post your tips on, nice to have them in one place for people looking for suggestions. Glad we don't have to deal with 118*, can't imagine.

Thanks so much, Kelsie2290 . I had tried to post a link with my earlier post to a really great - very helpful article, but it seems to not have made it on.

If you go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum, you can locate and post on your state thread. They may have some other ideas to surviving unrelenting heat. I know shade, natural or manufactured is necessary also.

Hi Fellow Zonies! I am going on my second year raising chickens here in Arizona. I have 6 one year olds and 8 new (February) chicks. BO, RIRs, Black Australorps, SLWs, Americaunas, and BRs.

Here are a few things I have done....

I make large ice cubes. I use a soft lunch bag insert (the plastic support from inside the bag) I bought at walmart as my ice cube tray. I never used the inserts but held on to the plastic inserts thinking they would be handy one day. Boy are they.

I bought a nipple waterer that attaches to a 5 gallon cooler. No dirty water and the best part is I put the big ice cube in the cooler so they have cool water to drink. The girls love it!

I also make the big ice cube and put it in a plastic container with low sides (like a baby pool). They peck at is, walk on it, and then when it melts completely, they have cool water to walk around in.

I sometimes will take the hose and give them a muddy place to scratch and lay in.

As far as the heat in the night, be sure your coop has plenty of ventilation. I don't have electricity in my coop but I have plenty of cross ventilation.

Thank you for all the info. I'm doing a lot of those things and have modified my coop for summer, giving it a good cross breeze. I love the ice block idea!

Cross-posting from another thread....

I am in North Phoenix (New River) and out of the 4 chicks I got this spring 2 turned out to be roosters and I am trying to find a new home for them - Black Australorp is 15 wks and a New Hampshire Heritage 12 wks. Both raised organically from the start, very healthy sweet boys, I just can't keep them. Free to good home, hopefully not for eating

Welcome to BYC! Sorry about the loss of one of your girls. I raised chickens in CA's northern Sacramento Valley where summer temperatures frequently reached 117-118 F (123 F once), so I can identify with you regarding the heat. What kind of chickens do you have?
