Congratulations on the fixer upper! I flipped houses for 5 years (5 in 5) and my current house is still underway. I'm staying in this one!
Ironic, I have a degree in Environmental Chemistry. Wanted to work more for the environment that the corporation. Liked making peoples homes a whole lot more than working in the Rat Race!

TWO!!! Australian cattle dogs!!! They are a working dog & need heaps of exercise & things to do because they are super smart. They must be a handful on a 1/4 acre. You are brave.​

Thank you! We love cattle dogs!! Yes, you're right, they're super smart. Ours knows many commands and is too smart for his own good. We're picking up our second in May. We actually got our first pup when living in an apartment! :lau As long as they get their exercise they're terrific. We're long distance hikers so we're no stranger to 14 mile days. I think our pup got more exercise when we lived in an apartment because I was so worried he didn't have enough stimulation. Now he sunbathes, watches our house progress, and goes on the typical weekend hike. There's a learning curve to working dogs but they're the most loyal, sweetest, and bravest pups :) Yesterday I had the chicks outside to try and acclimate them to the outdoors before they make the move in a few weeks and accidentally tipped their pen over. You can imagine what ten chicks running in every direction was like... so scary! Arlo rounded them right up and helped me put them back safely in their pen. He'll be a great flock protector!

I live in town but at the end of a cup-de-sac and my backyard is next to the conservancy. So it really doesn’t feel like town :) unless I head out of my immediate neighborhood. First thing I did in the yard.... rip out half of the lawn, put a rain garden in, loads of native plants including tall prairie plants, native shrubs and smaller trees. I grow some veggies and herbs but most of it in the front yard. A couple of years ago I ripped up the front lawn too, slowly adding natives there too but the veggies will stay. Could not imagine not having chickens :wee

That sounds so beautiful! Sounds like your home was a score :) I'm hoping to do a lot of native plants too and we'll be using our side/front yards since they get great sun exposure. I'm sure my neighbor thinks I'm a little weird tearing out the lawn but I would much rather make use of it for pollinator plants and vegetation. I love that you use your front yard! So many neat people on here doing great things.

That's so impressive! I feel like I've already fallen for the flipper lifestyle. It's just so much fun and I'm sure there's money to be made. Already our house value has increased dramatically. Our next place will definitely be a fixer upper too. You just can't beat the pricing! Plus we enjoy the work. I'm surprised that we get so much flack for just doing our thing. Many people lament how much yard work we have cut out for us, or say something along the lines of how they don't envy the house projects. We thrive on it and it's made our bond even stronger. Love that you found something outside the typical 9 to 5. That's the dream!
