Greetings BYC!
New chicken keepers here from Reno, NV.
Let me start by saying thank you to the BYC community for all your help so far. This forum has been an invaluable resource to us (my wife and myself). From tips to designing our coop, advice on dealing with 'pasty-butt, and much more, the BYC forum has provided great information and inspiration.
In May this year we took the plunge and brought home 8 beautiful chicks. We had considered chickens for several years and after reading many articles about the benefits of keeping chickens in publications like "Mother Earth News," "Hobby Farm Homes," etc. we couldn't resist anymore. My wife was initially the more enthusiastic on the venture but when I held the first chick in my hands I was hopelessly hooked.
Our Flock (so far):
Blue Silkie
Black Silkie
Blue-lace Red Wyandotte
Plymouth Barred Rock
White Cochin
Australorp
Buff Brahma
Buff Orpington (we got a Rooster, uh-oh)
Keeping chickens is much more satisfying than I expected. They are beautiful birds and their personalities are quite charming and unique. I find hanging out with them after a long day at work relaxing and soothing to frayed nerves. And while I eagerly await the first eggs I would be perfectly happy to keep them as pets if they never laid a one.
