Quick introduction: About a year ago City of Sacramento approved residents to own up to 3 chickens (no roosters) within city limits. So, with my two sons (8 & 13) we went down to the local feed store and picked up 2 day old Petunia, Stella & Peach. Eight months later, we have eggs!

Thank You. Since I am a "rookie" at raising chickens.. I have a question you might be able to answer. Sacramento winters are generally mild but this year we have had a few nights dip to 33 + or - degrees. Should I be warming the coop or are my “children” fine?

Hello and welcome from Ohio....so glad you joined. I dont heat my coop (10X12 wooden garden shed). The entire front south facing side stays open year round.

It got down to zero 1 night last winter and was really windy. I worried in the night so went to check and it was really cozy inside even with the whole front open. There is a door I can close if needed but when I feel under their feathers they are always toasty warm :) There are lots of people who heat their coops tho. I just worry if the electric goes out for some reason they are better off if they are used to no heat. I do have a few young chickens on the floor of the coop right now that are under a heat lamp, but am slowly raising it and they seem fine :) Hope that helps
