I am just starting out with a trio of little chicks and hope to share and learn more about keeping chickens in our backyard. I'm not entirely new to chickens, as I had two hens for several years about ten years ago. I got it into my head that I wanted to have chickens and quickly became obsessed first with the idea, then with the project, and eventually got the whole family involved with the whole delightful business of having pets with perks. Fresh eggs are the best!!! I was delighted when Sacramento began allowing residents to keep up to three chickens in their backyards this past year. When I had chickens before, I kept them ilegally under the radar, until I had to move into an apartment for awhile and give them up. My first chicken coop was also my first major building project and I was so proud of it. I had two buff orpington hens and they were wonderful pets for my 6 year old daughter. This time around everything has been a little less major. We got a very small portable coop, which would be much too small if they had to be in it 24/7. As Fall approaches, we have moved the portable coop into an old shed and are in the process of making modifications to give them more space. We've been finding lots of good ideas and stories online, especially here on BYC, so we wanted to join this group and share some of our stories as well.
