Hello everyone!
We are completely new to chickens but our children finally broke us down and we got 2 black stars and 2 rhode island reds. We've had them since January and now they are almost fully grown. We love their personalities. They are really so funny! Ruby, Sunny, Onyx and Shadow are their names (you can guess which ones are the reds and which ones are the black starts just from their names, right?)
We can't have any roosters because we live in the city of San Diego, so we were crossing our fingers that all would turn out to be hens.
Looking forward to finally seeing some eggs and figuring out a comfortable solution for their ranging that isn't too messy. We have them free-ranging in our backyard and there is poop everywhere. They have helped us with weeding our garden but also devouring all our kale and chard... We did allow it to happen though because we wanted them to grow up nice and strong. Now it's time to reign them in.
We're also trying to figure out a way to keep them safe from raccoons but not having to wake up at sunrise every day to let them out of the coop. It's been a learning curve, for sure.
My husband is the one with green fingers, son of a fruit farmer in Europe and talented gardener. He let the chickens destroy his vegetable garden, sign that he has become a softie for them. We are also learning about predators (skunks, opossums and raccoons fascinate my husband - he'd never seen before living in the US). I've been a city dweller all my life so need to learn many many skills. Excited for fresh eggs, for sure.
That's it for now,
Helena
